JJ glances at you as Sheriff Peterkin walks in, her expression as unimpressed as ever.

“You’re like a little rock in my shoe,” she mutters, sitting down behind her desk.

“Do you think we’ll be out of here soon?” you ask cautiously.

“You? Yes. Him? No.” Peterkin flips through some papers. “He assaulted a police officer.”

“How long are you keeping him?” you press.

Peterkin raises an eyebrow. “You and your boyfriend got somewhere to be?”

“He’s not my boyfriend,” you reply with a soft chuckle, but your voice falters slightly.

Peterkin smirks. “Better tell him that.”

JJ looks up sharply. “What?”

Peterkin leans back in her chair, giving you a knowing look. “Only love makes you that crazy, sweetheart. And that damn stupid.”

You avoid JJ’s gaze, but you can feel the heat of his stare as her words linger in the room.
