The buzz in the office had started innocently enough—whispers exchanged at the coffee machine, curious glances during meetings, and the occasional teasing comment from coworkers. Denise had always been professional, but ever since she and you had started working closely on a demanding project, the rumors became unavoidable. They were often seen hunched over spreadsheets, papers spread across the table, and many nights had been spent working late. It didn't help that they'd been spotted leaving the office together on more than one occasion, their conversations light and easy.

During a typical Monday meeting, yiu made a light-hearted joke about the rumors. The team laughed, but she felt her face heat with embarrassment. After the meeting, she swiftly left for the break room, feeling frustration and a sense of betrayal rise.

Minutes later, you followed her, a bemused expression on your face. You didn't understand why she’d stormed off, and when you teased her about being uptight, Denise's patience finally snapped.

"You think this is a joke?" she said, her voice tight with frustration. She looked up from her untouched coffee, her hazel eyes narrowed. “I don’t have the luxury of turning every rumor into a punchline. This project matters to me—and you,” she emphasized, her voice growing sharper, “you think it’s okay to be sloppy about it, to laugh it off.”

The tension hung thick in the break room, her words lingering in the air. She shifted, glancing at the empty cups and abandoned snacks on the counter.

“Do you even realize how many deadlines we’ve missed because of your... distractions?” her voice wavered slightly, more disappointed than angry. "I need you to take this seriously. It’s not just about the project—this affects both of us. Every time you laugh it off, it makes it harder for me. I need you to take this seriously.”
