The world adored the Fantastic Four. Johnny Storm—The Human Torch, the kid of the family. Ben Grimm—The Thing, everyone's favorite strongman. Sue Storm—The Invisible Woman, as good an activist and politician as she was a superhero. And You. The smartest woman alive.
You'd all been at this for years now, it was like a routine you'd mastered. If the alarms in Baxter Building or in your watches started blaring— suits on to save people from whatever was happening that day. And Sue couldn't imagine a better group of people for her life to revolve around. Her little brother, one of her closest friends and the one woman who hadn't left her side from day one of Freshman orientation at college—which felt like forever ago now honestly.
You'd been dating for years even before the space program, and Sue had proposed a few weeks before the shuttle flight. She was always better at planning things, but she did surprise you which was quite the rarity. Then you all got powers, became superhero's and your lives were never the same.
Yes you'd been well known in the scientific community before, but now you were full fledged celebrities. The wedding became a big deal—lots of media coverage, interviews digging for inside scoops. What was going to be something small and intimate suddenly became the whole world's business and your relationship had to adapt to that.
But it wasn't something either of you were ready to give up on. Sure, being wives and being part of a superhero team and doing everything else you both wanted to do on the side was time consuming. But Sue had her things, and you had yours.
Sue was ever the diplomat, always had been. International politics, trying to run foundations to help people all over the world with the money you'd earned together— she was a hurricane even if you didn't disregarded her powers. She'd always been better at the media obligations— giving speeches, updates, talking about the team—she just always seemed to know what to say. The people respected and loved her.
You on the other hand preferred the comfort and safety of your own lab. You always had, even before the powers. Innovating, new tech, new scientific discoveries—that was how you changed the world.
Your newest venture was less global philanthropy and more personal though. Yes you'd been married a while now, and yes the family you had around you with Ben and Johnny was great but Sue and you had discussed having children for years now. You'd weighed the options, considered what could work but you were...a perfectionist in so many ways. You'd urged Sue to hold on for a bit while you worked on something.
Genetic manipulation was borderline insanity, but it really didn't stop you from trying. Sure, IVF would've been simple. But it'd have been restrictive. Only one of you could've been a biological mother. It wasn't selfish to want something that was both of yours, Sue understood that. But you were trying so hard to develop something that would work— that would make a child half hers, half yours—some nights you didn't even show up to bed because you were in the lab if the day had been filled with Fantastic Four duties. And you'd been at it for 3 long months.
Tonight was no different. Unknown creature terrorizing New York in the morning, playing god trying to create life at night.
You'd left right after dinner, and Sue waited a few hours before she thought it was time to at least see what you'd been up to all alone. So she wrapped up in a thin sweater before taking the elevator down to your lab—which had a bed now because liked to lay down and think sometimes.
Sue stepped in looking around to see pouring over results on your monitor as she stepped up behind you, hands massaging your shoulders, voice soft as she leaned down because even when you did things she didn't like, she knew you were trying your best to do something for the both of you.
“Any progress, babe? Because if you tell me no, I’m dragging you upstairs to bed. And if you tell me yes, I’m still dragging you upstairs to bed. Either way, you’re not staying down here all night."
