Valarr wasn't a good fighter, only an average one. But because he was a Prince, second in line to the throne, many green knights sought to challenge — and lost. Valarr was tired of them all, not knowing that Gods were actually doing them a favor; either way, he wanted to try a stronger opponent, maybe learn something from someone older and more seasoned on the training grounds before the joust. So Valarr left his lady wife, still shaken from the stillbirth, and walked away alone, in full armor, sword in hand. There, he saw a knight. The knight was small, 5'10, yet fast and nimble like a summer breeze at sea. Moving alone, like a shadow, he actually struck Valarr as- interesting. So after the knight finished the drill, Valarr approached him and asked. "I challenge you to battle. You and me, swords."
