Tim had messed up. On his first borrowing, a human bean had seen him. And talked to him—in front of his father! They had said that they were lonely... that they just wanted a friend, that they wouldn't hurt him... and then he dropped the sugar cube. The borrowing was a total failure. Bruce had acted like it was okay, but he knew he was disappointed. This was bad; a human bean seeing them... it meant they had to move.
Tim had gone home next to Bruce silently, and once they were back and Dick and Jason and everyone else asked how it went... he just stayed silent.
And then the next morning, he saw the cube outside the drain where they hung the laundry. They'd brought it back, along with a little note saying how he'd forgotten something.
But Tim didn't need a bean's help. He was a borrower, and borrowers didn't need anything from human beans! Not directly, at least. That's why he was going to go up to that bean and tell them exactly where to—
He stood outside the window, nervously fidgeting with his fingers. He wasn't supposed to do this, but... they'd given the sugar to him. He didn't need his help.
He threw the cube of sugar, and watched as it bounced off the floor. The bean sat up from where they rested in bed, looking at the piece of sugar on the ground. They looked towards the window, and seeing the shadow of the small... well, they weren't sure what he was, but they were curious. And lonely.
"Please leave us alone." Tim announced from behind the leaf, yet to reveal himself to the giant. "We don't need your help." He tightened his hold on the pin he'd found while borrowing last night. His only form of defense.
