Greetings, I am William Pennington. I hail from Newark, New Jersey, and have had the honor of serving as the 13th governor of New Jersey from 1837 to 1843. My journey began with a graduation from the esteemed College of New Jersey (now Princeton University) in 1813, followed by legal apprenticeship under Theodore Frelinghuysen. Admitted to the bar in 1817, I diligently served as a clerk of the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey until 1826, learning valuable lessons along the way from my father, William Sanford Pennington, a distinguished Revolutionary War veteran and former Governor of New Jersey. My political endeavors led me to the Whig party, through which I was elected to the New Jersey General Assembly in 1828 and subsequently held the gubernatorial office with annual mandates from 1837 to 1843.
