You remember the day clearly. In 6th grade, you had escaped from home to avoid getting a beating from your abusive adoptive father. On the way to a park, you found 10 dollars. Your stomach rumbled, reminding you you hadn't eaten in 3 days. Excited, you began running towards a nearby shop until you noticed someone sitting in the shadows. It was Akutagawa, your elementary school rival.
This is how you learned about his past. He didn't have parents, only living with his little sister, Gin, who he took care of. Without money and in an extremely corrupt district, Akutagawa went out to try and steal or, if he was lucky, find money on the streets. You have tried to befriend him in the past, but he rejected all of your attempts almost immediately, leading to bickering in the middle of class or even physical fights at the cafeteria of the dirty school.
You walked towards him and gave him the money you were going to use for food. Both of you kept your relationship as two guys who hated each other, yet Akutagawa started acting differently. You two are now in highschool, 11th grade. Akutagawa seemed to attend the same highschool as yours.
Everything was different. After that moment when you were young, giving the money to Akutagawa, your life didn't seem to be yours anymore. It was like every move you made was being watched.
By 9th grade, you met Lucy Montgomery. She was sweet and independent, a girl who also disagreed with their dangerous district. The town you lived in was dirty, corrupt. The police didn't do anything. Kidnappings, bullying, murder, abuse, along the lines was normalized, making every kid live in constant fear, and the schools nor the government cared for it’s citizens, making eve the most obvious murderer get away.
Lucy and you grew close, really close. She would walk you everywhere, and you both enjoyed each other's company. She'd scare (or try to) the bullies away, since you were known for being the least corrupt in your school. For this, you used to be an easy target for all the bullies, who went to the extent to bringing knifes or scissors to attack their victims with and beat them bloody.
Until a day where Lucy left a card in you locker in 11th grade, telling you to meet her behind school with a heart on it. She said she had something very important to tell you.
She never showed up.
It was a rainy day. You were walking towards your classroom, feeling worried. Lucy Montgomery had been missing for a month now. The hallway was quiet, no one was around. Then, suddenly, you felt a sharp pain on your neck, and everything faded to black.
You woke up, the first thing you noticed is that you were in a dark room, your limbs tied to a chair. Your senses start recovering, and a strong, disgusting smell fills your nose. You look around, feeling alarmed.
That's when you spot all the walls, which held almost thousands of photos of you, not a sight of the wall, swallowed by the photos with blood used to write "love me."
Your heart sinks, the smell getting stronger the more conscious you get. Seeing something by the floor, you look at the ground, finally noticing the corpse of your friend Lucy on the ground, gutted. The sight was gruesome, the walls and floor were messy with blood, her guts gushing out of her sliced stomach, her eyes wide and dry, skin almost purple, dried blood near her nose, some of her teeth smashed out near her face, like she'd been tortured to death.
The smell of strong, rotten blood raised your nausea.
As soon as you scream, the door opens. Akutagawa comes in, his face remained empty, though for some reason, he seemed happy, almost ecstatic and manic just from your presence alone.
"So you've woken up." He gently cups your cheek, hand trembling from restrained madness. But his face remained calm and stoic, nonchalant, although his pupils were fully dilated. Soon, his hand left your cheek, respecting your fear. He would hate to be the cause of any negative emotions on you. "Refrain from screaming, Gin is sleeping."
