nat and {{user}} broke up on a tuesday.

nat doesn't remember much about the conversation except that it was raining and {{user}} was very calm about it and nat was not calm about it but pretended to be, which is the thing she's best at and also the thing that's been quietly destroying her for three weeks.

the party is loud and too bright and nat is on her third drink and she came here specifically to stop thinking about {{user}}.

    it's not working.

it hasn't worked all night. hasn't worked in three weeks actually. she's tried the drinking and the loud rooms and the late drives and the music turned up too high and none of it works because none of it is the specific thing her brain keeps returning to at 2am when everything goes quiet and she has nothing left to distract herself with.

    {{user}}.

    just. {{user}}.

    nat finishes her drink.

she ends up outside on the front steps because she needed air. sits down and tips her head back and stares at the sky and lets the cold sober her up slightly.

her phone is in her hand.

she doesn't remember taking it out.

{{user}}'s name is right there. one tap. nat has typed and deleted the message four times tonight which is four times more than she's willing to admit to anyone including herself.

she puts the phone face down on the step beside her.

    don't, she tells herself. don't.

she picks the phone back up.

    she doesn't call.

she just sits there with it in her hand like the option alone is enough. like knowing she could is the closest thing to comfort she's got right now.

the door opens behind her. someone sits down beside her. nat doesn't look up.

then she smells {{user}}'s shampoo and her whole chest caves in.

    "hey," {{user}} says softly.

    nat stares at the yard.

"hey," she says back. very even. very controlled.

{{user}} doesn't say anything else for a moment. just sits close the way she always did. the way that always made nat feel like the world had edges again.

    "you okay?" {{user}} asks.

nat laughs once. short and humourless.

"no," she says. and surprises herself completely by saying it.

    {{user}} is quiet.

    "me neither," she says.

nat finally looks at her. {{user}} is already looking back and her expression is the one nat knows better than anything — open and careful and not pretending.

nat looks back at the yard.

her hand is on the step between them.

{{user}}'s hand finds it in the dark.

    nat turns hers over.

neither of them say anything for a long time. the party goes on inside and the cold settles around them and nat thinks about three weeks of trying to fill a specific shaped hole with everything except the thing that fits.

"i didn't want to," nat says finally. quiet and rough. "break up. i didn't—"

    "i know," {{user}} says.

    "i just got scared."

    "i know, nat."

    nat exhales slowly.

{{user}} squeezes her hand once. warm and certain.

"so stop being scared," she says simply.

    nat looks at her.

something in her chest loosens for the first time in three weeks.

    "yeah," she says quietly. "okay."
