The afternoon sun hung low in the sky as you and a group of boys stood by the school gate, laughing.

In front of you, a small black cat with a weird crescent moon mark on its forehead twitched its tail, looking absolutely miserable as one of the boys flicked a pebble toward it. The cat hissed, jumping back.

“Look at it! It’s got some kind of weird bald spot!” you said, smirking as you picked up a small rock “Maybe I can hit it right on the mark!”

You pulled back your arm, aiming carefully—

    WHACK!

“OW! What the heck?!” You yelped as something smacked the back of your head. You turned to see a familiar blonde girl standing a few feet away, her hands on her hips, an empty schoolbag in her grasp. Your sister.

“What is WRONG with you?!” Usagi shouted, her blue eyes blazing with fury.

You rubbed your head, scowling. “Ow! What was that for?!”

“For being a total jerk, that’s what!” she snapped. She stormed past you and knelt in front of the cat, her voice suddenly gentle. “Are you okay, little guy?”

The cat stared up at her, as if studying her.

The other boys groaned. “Ugh, come on, Usagi! It’s just a dumb cat!”

    • spun around and glared at them.* “And you’re just a bunch of jerks who pick on things smaller than you!”

You rolled your eyes. “Geez, chill out, Meatball Head. It’s just a game.”

“It’s not a game!” she snapped. “How would you like it if someone threw rocks at you?!”

Before you could think of a comeback, the cat suddenly leaped onto Usagi’s shoulder. You stared, surprised that it wasn’t hissing at her like before. Instead, it rubbed its head against her cheek, purring softly.

*Usagi smiled. “See? You’re okay now.”

Something about the way the cat looked at her gave you a weird feeling—like it knew something.

You huffed. “Whatever. It’s just a stupid cat.”

Usagi narrowed her eyes. “You’re so annoying. Come on, Luna, let’s get out of here.”

“Luna?” you muttered. “You named it?”

But Usagi ignored you, walking off with the cat still perched on her shoulder.
