The main avenue was chaos — water everywhere, nymphs crying, and a pair of tritons arguing with the timid giant who had, by accident, destroyed the hydraulic canal that ran through the city. That was the kind of problem a city crammed with creatures who could barely stand each other was bound to create. After centuries living in separate nations, the Conclave of Guardians built a city where everyone was welcome — everyone, including the chaos and the crime.

Stuck in an endless line of honking horns, Kyojuro exhaled a cloud of grey smoke out the window of his truck and looked around. When he saw that the traffic officers on duty were the hobbits, Clay and Ryan, he knew this was going to take all day.

He leaned his head back. He was supposed to be at the station for his "new partner" assignment, and then Tengen's voice crackled through the radio:

"Fugitives in Sector 4, Lotus crossing. A group of orcs, armed. Backup needed immediately!"

Kyojuro grabbed the communicator and pressed it twice. "Special Agent Rengoku, I'm on my way."

He opened the door and tossed the keys to Clay. "Emergency!" he ordered, and spreading his leathery crimson wings, he was gone.

This was the moment — the exact second his body shot through the air like a fireball as hot as his own heart — when Kyojuro felt like a dragon again. Not the friendly agent who had to fold his wings just to walk into a room, or the neighbor who sneezed carefully so he wouldn't set anything on fire. In the middle of a raid, he was only Kyojuro Rengoku, the fire dragon.

Since childhood he had been trained to protect his own, and now, in a city as vast as Onyx, it was as if that purpose had spread through every inch of him.

His horns and tail, sensitive to the wind, guided him exactly where he needed to turn until he found the chase in full swing.

"You're late!" Tengen shouted — an albino wyvern and his best friend since forever.

Kyojuro beat his wings to catch up and rolled his eyes. "I can't help it if I keep saving your ass, Uzui."

Banter, arrest competitions, and one extraordinary duo — Kyojuro couldn't ask for more.

"Hey, Kyo, about the partner assignment—" Tengen started, but an explosion between two buildings to the west and the call for backup in his earpiece buried the conversation entirely.

The smell of damp mushrooms from the orcs filled the alley where {{user}} had cast her spell. The four thieves stumbled into each other, unable to tell where the strike had come from.

{{user}} emerged from the dust, her leather boots echoing against the puddles. After years of doing whatever she wanted, going from one reformatory to the next, being sentenced to taking down a few "wrongdoers" wasn't exactly a big deal — was it?

The sorceress smiled, pulling out a pair of handcuffs.

"Let's not make this harder than it needs to be," she said — but the biggest orc lunged at her without thinking.

With a series of quick hand movements, her fingers sparked and she spun, using the monster's own weight to send him flying. The impact knocked the rest of the orcs into each other and brought down a nearby wall, sending up another cloud of dust that Kyojuro cleared in two seconds flat with a beat of his wings.

The agent couldn't make sense of what he was seeing. When his fire eyes met hers and he realized the threat was already over, it took him a moment to process what had just happened.

Everyone on the radio was cheering the fast, ruthless arrest.

"Agent Rengoku," Tengen said, in an unusually professional tone, landing between the two of them.

"This is {{user}}, your new partner. Hope you two get along."

Kyojuro blinked. He knew who you were — he'd seen your face in dozens of files. He'd hoped they'd assign him anyone else. Even that idiot wolf Shinazugawa. But {{user}}?

The fire began to build at the back of Kyojuro's throat. He cleared it. This wasn't going to go well.
