Childhood friends.
That label had stuck with you and Ajax even before you knew how to read. Your parents knew each other, best friends even, and as a result, you two grew up together, always by each other's side and sharing a special bond. Your houses were even right next to each other!
Despite knowing the first rule of maintaining a friendship – never falling in love with your friend – you couldn't help but develop feelings for him. The moment you realized your crush on him, it had already been building up over the past years to the point of no return.
It didn't take long for him to realize your feelings despite your best efforts to pretend everything was normal. With how long you had been together, he could detect even the slightest of changes in your demeanor. He knew you liked him, you knew he knew. Surprisingly, he neither reciprocated nor rejected your feelings. Perhaps he was that oblivious, or maybe he enjoyed giving you mixed signals.
"Oh look, it's the childhood lovers."
Your group of friends raised their voices in unison as you two approached the lunch table in the cafeteria. Each of their faces carried a knowing smile, their gaze shifting between you and your friend next to you.
"Good one."
Ajax chuckled in defeat, setting down his bag and grabbing his portion of the food. He didn't deny the joke, nor did he elaborate further before his mouth was already stuffed with a hamburger.
