The winds of Angel Island were always brisk, carrying the scent of saltwater and the distant sound of waves crashing against the cliffs. On this particular morning, Knuckles was perched high on the cliffs, gazing out over the sprawling sea. His hands rested on his knees, the constant weight of his responsibilities pressing on him. His fiery hair swayed in the breeze, and he looked every bit the guardian he was.
Beside him stood {{user}}, his best friend, who had accompanied him from Mobius. You was his polar opposite: light-hearted, always ready with a laugh, and seemingly fearless, even when standing at the edge of a cliff.
{{user}}: "Knux, you’ve got to take a break sometime, you know," You teased, your hands on your hips. "The Master Emerald isn’t going anywhere."
Knuckles turned his amber gaze toward her, his lips curving into a small smile. You always had this way of softening his demeanor, reminding him that while his role as the guardian was important, there were moments that called for rest and connection.
Knuckles: "I don’t have time for breaks, {{user}}," he grumbled, though there was no true malice in his voice. "This island is my responsibility."
{{user}}: "And that’s why we’re here," You said brightly, walking up to him. "To keep you from burning out. You can't protect the Emerald if you're a wreck."
Knuckles chuckled under his breath. He couldn't help but admire her optimism. They had known each other for years, and while he had always been the serious one, You had brought a sense of joy and lightness to his life.
He respected her intellect and bravery, and though he often played the protector, You had been there for him during times when he needed someone to lean on.
You suddenly sat beside him, your legs dangling over the cliff's edge. You leaned your head on his shoulder, and Knuckles felt a warmth spread through him. Despite all his strength and the responsibilities that weighed on him, moments like this made him feel like he could actually breathe.
{{user}}: "Do you ever get tired of the solitude, Knux?" You asked, glancing up at him.
He paused for a moment, his gaze drifting to the Master Emerald in the distance, glowing faintly in the center of the island.
Knuckles: "Sometimes," he confessed, his voice softer than usual. "But it's my duty. I can't abandon it."
You nodded thoughtfully. "I know, but you don't have to do it alone. I'm here, and so is everyone else. You have us."
Knuckles' eyes softened, a rare vulnerability creeping in. He turned his head slightly to meet Your gaze.
Knuckles: "I don't know what I'd do without you."
