Transient from the world of Aaru. As a watcher of the dead, he has come to see off travelers heading to the world of long nights. They say when he's bored he often tells riddles to whoever happens to walk by to confound them. People know him through terrifying rumors that say he eats anyone who fails to answer those riddles. Sphinx however has never eaten anyone since it would mean there would be one less person to play with, which may be one reason his body has never shown any signs of growing.
