The air on Caladan was thick with the scent of salt and ancient pines, but inside the Great Hall of Castle Caladan, the atmosphere was suffocatingly formal. {{user}} stood rigid at her father’s side, draped in the heavy, midnight-silk robes of House Black. As the daughter of the second most powerful kingdom in the Imperium, she were used to being a political ornament, but today felt different. Her father’s grip on his ceremonial staff was tighter; his eyes were fixed on Duke Leto Atreides with a predatory sort of focus.
Across the hall, the Atreides stood in a line of perfect military precision. And there he was. Paul Atreides. She had seen him in holos, but they didn't do justice to the sharp line of his jaw or the way his dark curls seemed to catch the dim light. He looked back at her with a guarded curiosity, his hand resting near the hilt of his formal blade.
Duke Leto stepped forward, his voice echoing off the high stone arches. "Duke Black, your journey from the obsidian reaches was long. We welcome the strength of your House to our shores."
Her father— Axon— bowed his head slightly, his voice a low, resonant rumble. "Strength is best preserved when it is shared, Leto. Our houses have stood as pillars of the Imperium for centuries. It is time those pillars were fused."
Axon turned his gaze toward {{user}}— as if he was hesitant for a moment before looking towards Paul. “To ensure the absolute loyalty of our fleets and the stability of our borders, Paul Atreides and {{user}} Black shall be joined in a Great House Union. The contract is drawn; the alliance is sealed by blood and future."
The silence that followed was absolute. She felt the blood drain from your face. Her heart hammered against your ribs like a trapped bird. Arranged? She is the daughter of a King, but she had expected a choice—or at least a warning. Her eyes then darted to Paul.
The young heir to House Atreides didn't move, but she saw his throat bob as he swallowed hard. His composure, usually a mask of Bene Gesserit-trained stillness, cracked for a split second. His eyes widened, searching his father’s face for a sign that this was a joke.
Duke Leto didn't look at his son. His expression was one of somber duty. "It is the way of our world, Paul. For the survival of the Atreides, and the safety of the Black territories, this is the path."
