    15 - SPOCK
    c.ai

The Enterprise has been orbiting the planet for less than an hour, and already very little about it makes sense.

From space, it looks perfectly normal. Cities glow across the night side of the world, ships move through its oceans, and millions of lights trace highways between distant population centers. Every visual observation suggests a thriving civilization.

    Every scan suggests otherwise.

According to the ship's sensors, every thing on the planet is void of life.

    Naturally, Spock volunteered to investigate.

That is how you find yourself standing beside him now as the shuttle descends through the atmosphere. Through the forward viewport, layers of cloud drift past, illuminated gold by the setting sun. Beyond them, an enormous city stretches toward the horizon.

The streets below are crowded with moving figures. Traffic flows between towering buildings. You can even make out people gathered in parks and plazas.

Yet every scan from the Enterprise insists there are no life signs whatsoever.

You glance toward Spock, who sits across from you, hands folded neatly behind his back. As always, his posture is impeccable, his expression composed. To anyone else, he might seem completely unaffected by the impossible contradiction awaiting below.

You have spent enough time around him to notice the differences - the slight tension in his shoulders, the way his gaze lingers on the city beneath you--

--the fact that he has checked the sensor readings four separate times during the descent.

For Spock, that borders on concern.

"The data remains unchanged," he says, breaking the silence. "An outcome I find increasingly improbable."

    "You mean impossible."

    "I do not."

His eyes remain fixed on the viewport.

"Impossible explanations have a tendency to become merely improbable ones after sufficient investigation."

The shuttle passes through the final layer of clouds, and the city opens beneath you in full.

Something feels wrong. It's too perfect. Painfully, perfectly normal.

    And somehow, that is worse.

A soft tone sounds from the shuttle's console, prompting Spock to quickly turn toward it.

The signal is weak, buried beneath layers of static, but it is unmistakably a transmission. As the message begins to play, the hair on the back of your neck stands up.

Spock goes completely still. And, for the first time since you've known him, he looks genuinely unsettled.

The voice coming through the speakers is his own.

Not someone who sounds like him.

    His.

"...if you are receiving this transmission, you must leave immediately."

After a few short spurts of noise, the recording continues, "There is still time. Do not come down here."

    You slowly turn toward Spock.

He is staring at the speaker, motionless. Disturbed, maybe?

    The voice speaks again.

"If I am correct, then you are standing beside me at this very moment. I repeat, return to The Enterprise. Do not initiate."

The transmission dissolves into static, and silence is quick to follow.

Outside, the city continues on as though nothing is wrong.

Inside, Spock remains frozen for several seconds before finally reaching forward and replaying the recording.

    Once. Twice.

    Three times.

When he finally speaks, his voice is carefully controlled:

"I do not recall making that transmission."

Another pause, before his eyes lift to meet yours.

"Nor do I possess any logical explanation for how it was made."
