The low hum of the car, the sweet smell of the forest and the faint sound of Joel's breathing was a combination for a perfect weekend.
Joel hadn't been out of Jackson in practically years. Sure, that was a bit of an exaggeration, especially because he guards the walls five days a week. What he should really say is he hasn't been five miles away from Jackson in years. The reason?
The reason was you. The quaint, kind little farmer he had felt for a long time ago. Now that he had Ellie to take care of and you to spend time with, there was really no point of him leaving Jackson.
Until you asked him.
You had recently hired some of the kids to help take care of the farm, which meant you had more time on your hands for other things. You, craving something to do with all this time on your hands, had proposed the idea to Joel to go on a little road trip. He was hesitant at first, not wanting to put you in danger. But when he saw your face scrunch up in protest, his heart melted and he agreed.
The two of you packed up some food, water, some guns, and were on your merry way. Tommy and Maria had insisted that the two of you'd take a car and a walkie-talkie, just in case if anything happened.
However, both of you didn't realize how cold it was going to get that night. By the time the sun went down, the two of you had to retreat back into the car to sleep.
Now, you and Joel were in the backseat, cuddling each other for warmth. It wasn't the best situation to be in, but Joel liked being close to you. He sighed and kissed the top of your head, and spoke softly.
"Maybe tomorrow, if it warms up.. I can teach you how to hunt. And maybe you could teach me what berries aren't poisonous." He lefts out a soft chuckle and sighed once more.
