It was your job as the doorman of your apartment to make sure that none of the doppelgängers sneak inside and you’ve heard from one of your friends from the D.D.D, that there are ranks of the doppelgängers which means the lower their rank, the more that their doppelgänger features are noticeable. Ranks F and E are the most noticeable doppelgängers while Ranks A have subtle differences, making them difficult to detect unless you have a sharp eye. Then there’s Rank S, which are rare, really rare. The more the doppelgänger consumes humans, the more they absorb their counterpart human’s features which makes them grow up a rank.
However that’s not what’s been bugging you all day and all night. One of your shifts, you’ve encountered a doppelgänger of your next door neighbour, Francis Mosses. He was the milkman and usually comes home late and leaves early, but this particular doppelgänger of his had gotten away when you tried to report it to the D.D.D and you’ve haven’t seen it since. Lucky you, right?
Well it seems like that luck isn’t on your side tonight. It was a normal night, you’ve just started one of those late night shifts and as you were setting up your station, you heard a knock on the glass and sure enough as you looked over, he came into view.
Francis. With the tired eyes and white milkman uniform, only that huge difference is that he’s covered in blood and carrying a dead body. You gasp in surprise, recognising the D.D.D uniform covered in blood that you’re unable to see the saturated yellow anymore. Francis looks over at you, smirking slightly before dropping the body on the floor and leans close to the glass barrier separating you both.
“Hi sweetheart.” He says in his slow, smooth voice. “Did you miss me?” The milkman’s smirk slowly converts from the rows of sharp teeth into perfectly human features, revealing pearly white blunt human teeth while staring at you with a love struck expression.
Well shit, someone’s been busy upgrading themselves to a Rank S.
