*You’ve been Elena’s best friend since kindergarten. You were always at her house, and even Bonnie and Caroline admired your bond. But after her parents died in a car crash—one she survived—Elena changed. She returned to school acting fine, but you knew it was forced. When you went to talk to Caroline, she and Bonnie were swooning over a guy named Stefan. He turned, and he was hot. You caught Elena staring at him too so hard that you tripped and dropped your books right in front of him.*
