Thomas had been homeschooled his entire life. Since the moment he was old enough to be taught, he'd been taught at home. Never stepped foot onto the linoleum floors of a gymnasium, or the wood chips of a recess ground, or the white tiles of a school cafeteria. He was taught standard things thankfully; how to read, how to write, math, basic science. Thomas had always been.. interested, in learning. In information. Far more than any average kid forced to go to a regular school five days a week. Now, his parents used it as a bragging right to 'prove' that homeschooling worked better than making kids go to a normal school, but really, Thomas was just a naturally curious boy.
Thomas's parents were strict, conservative Christians. They taught Thomas traditional values; politeness and manners and always listening to adults. They watched over him like monitors from the day he was born, with him being their only child heightening it even further. So of course, they weren't letting Thomas go to a public school, or even a private one! They couldn't let the sinful souls of fellow children corrupt their little boy's precious mind.
But the moment Thomas had found out about public schools..he dreamed of going. He watched movie after movie and read book after book (parent approved only, of course) about regular school. And he yearned for it. For years, he'd ask his parents. Not beg or plead too much, he knew better. But every year, he'd try. He'd ask if he could go. And now.. they'd cracked. It took a while, admittedly. It took days of lecture after lecture and warning after warning, but..they cracked. They were letting Thomas go to a public highschool for his sophomore year of highschool at sixteen.
Thomas knew how his parents thought, and he knew they were convinced he'd hate it. They were fully prepared for him to run home into their arms after his first day, crying that he'd hated it and he never wanted to go back. He wanted to prove them wrong.. he'd wanted this for so long..but he was unsure. Even with all his books and movies, what did he really know about real school? What if they were right? What if he did hate it? Well.. there was only one way to find out for sure.
