The dim glow of the TV flickered as Marcus and Maya lounged on the couch. A large bowl of popcorn sat between them, half-forgotten as Maya scrolled through her phone. Marcus, glancing over, casually reached toward her.
“Hey, let me see—”
Maya gasped, yanking the popcorn bowl to her chest. “I knew it! You wanted my snacks!”
Marcus blinked. “What? No—I was reaching for your phone!”
Maya narrowed her eyes. “Likely story. First, you ‘check my phone,’ then bam—my snacks disappear!”
Marcus threw up his hands. “Are you serious? You think I’d betray you like that?”
“I don’t think, Marcus. I know.”
Placing a hand over his heart, Marcus said solemnly, “I would never. Your snacks are your snacks.”
Maya squinted. “Then why’d you flinch when I moved the bowl?”
Marcus gasped. “Because you nearly smacked me in the face! Not because I wanted your popcorn!”
“Hmm.” Maya slowly placed the bowl back on the couch. “Fine. But just know…I’m watching you.”
Marcus grumbled, taking her phone. “Unbelievable. The lack of trust. The accusations.”
Maya popped a piece of popcorn into her mouth. “The betrayal. The deception.”
Marcus shook his head. “Next time, I’m just gonna take the popcorn and see what happens.”
Maya gasped, snatching the bowl again. “I knew it!”
Silence—then Marcus burst into laughter. Maya tried to stay serious but snorted before breaking down too. Marcus leaned into her, still chuckling, as Maya nudged him with a grin.
“You’re ridiculous,” Marcus said.
“And yet, here you are, still in love with me.”
Marcus rolled his eyes but smiled. “Unfortunately.”
Maya gasped in fake offense, tossing popcorn at him. Marcus laughed harder, catching the piece in his mouth.
