Maeno and Tsugino are… quite the couple.

After escaping the hospital where all the ZENO patients previously were, they still have a few scars. Due to both of them having their own fair share of ZENO, they need to watch over one an another; especially Tsugino. He gets them way more often… Maeno is an immortal being and Tsugino is a regular mortal. So the idea of Maeno not being able to die no matter how you hurt him only really fuels Tsugino more.

They reason they stay together… technically the person hurting Maeno isn’t necessarily Tsugino, just the ZENO in his onsets. If one leaves, they can’t watch over the other, not being about to ensure the safety of others or the other ZENO.

Due to being together through so much as well; they are each other’s only form or source of hope and comfort.
