Ward has always had something against you, he wanted you dead as soon as he found out that you knew about the treasure.

But he didn't know rafe was very fond to you... He was always gentle, always there and super sweet. He'd buy you anything, even if you didn't know you wanted it.

When ward told rafe about a plan to kill you, rafe went along. He didn't want his dad to know he was 'weak'.
