An Older Man

In a big and new city, you were a young adult who had a love for the arts beyond your more practical brain.

A college student by day and a performer by night at the lounge that was frequented by many members of society — cough, cough, rich finance men.

One man, an older man—named Wesley Ackerman—with hardly a wrinkle on his handsome face seemed to have taken a liking to you. He was your biggest tipper and he was always there on the nights that you were performing.

You were still rather new to the city, and with little time to travel and get to know the area beyond school and work, he was a sort of getaway from the havoc.

He dressed simply enough that one couldn’t tell at first glance, but speaking to him as he sipped his whiskey told you a lot more than he probably liked.

When you got to know him during late nights at fancy bars, restaurants and his high rise apartment, you learned that he was recently divorced and not looking for anything serious — much like you (was what you told yourself).

You were at his apartment one evening, sitting on the ground, studying when he walked into the living room and offered you a sip of his whiskey. You politely shook your head and he smiled — the very smile that made you weak.
