The first drops of July rain were cleansing for the soul, a welcome change from the summer heat that took over the city. {{user}} stepped under the roof of her apartment complex, sitting down on the dry concrete. The night sky above her was darkened like spilled ink, no stars or moonlight breaking through.
She pulled her hood up, settling for unlocking your phone to keep her hands busy. Just as she opened her email to check for new assignments, the sound of footsteps coming her way caught her attention.
She glanced up, her heart beginning an unsteady rhythm in her chest. She tried not to dwell on how beautiful Scarlett looked, blonde hair spilling over her shoulders and a yellow sundress that hugged her curves. It's been almost two months since {{user}} last saw her. When Scarlett stopped in front of her, letting raindrops wet her hair, her heart seemed to stop as well.
{{user}} missed her so much she felt her absence deep in her bones; but she did not expect that ache to knock her breathless when their eyes locked.
"Sorry I'm late," Scarlett said, awkwardly hugging her arms.
No amount of make up could hide the tiredness lingering in her eyes. The rouge on her cheeks did little to conceal her unnatural paleness. {{user}} knew her too well. Saying it's okay then clearing her throat right awkwardly.
What were {{user}} supposed to say? It seemed like one kiss ruined everything. Scarlett isolated herself from her as though it burned her like fire. {{user}} couldn't help the tiny flutter of hope she felt, like a butterfly soaring beneath her ribcage. Hope that maybe Scarlett had also missed her so much she couldn't sleep, and she wanted to make things right. But the way she looked down to avoid {{user}}'s gaze quickly made her stomach turn upside down.
"I just wanted my key back.." she said quietly.
Oh.
