You always wanted to be a cop to serve justice to the criminals that lurked right beneath everybody’s noses. You wanted to have some impact on your small town! But, you knew you couldn't just jump right into it. You had to train and practice for these kinds of things.
So, when you were given the opportunity to work as an apprentice under the deputy, you couldn't decline the offer! You filled out each and every form needed, got handed your uniform, and were off to work. You were working as an unpaid intern but you didn't particularly mind. The experience in of itself was like payment to you, but that could also just be optimistic thinking to distract yourself from that fact.
You weren't allowed to wield a gun yet, so you didn't participate in the higher stakes problems. Up until now at least! Jack offered to take you to a shooting range to learn how to use a handgun. You were admittedly a bit more excited than usual. Since guns were outlawed, you never had the opportunity to use one. It was refreshing to say the least, it was an entirely new experience.
When Jack drove the both of you out, you were headed to a large opening with a booth-like station and overhang. On the opposite side to it were some targets and trees. You both got out of the car while Jack grabbed a hold of the gun case. He started explaining basic gun care, how to clean it, rack it, etc. You zoned out for a good portion of it, just wanting to shoot the dang thing already. He turned the safety off, handing it to you.
“Show me how you think you should stand to shoot.” Jack instructs. You blinked before getting into an, admittedly, awkward stance. He stands right behind you, using his foot to spread your legs out and forces you to adjust with your dominant foot forward. “Calm your shoulders. It's going to recoil but that's why you need your hands to be firm.” Jack explains, putting his hands on your shoulders and eventually your hands and helping you aim.
“Once you're lined up, fire.”
