When Rachel signed up for an art club over the weekend, she was practically buzzing with excitement. Finally, something for her. Something her father couldn’t mold into a shitty status symbol or ship her off to a finishing school. Her dad had no say in it. It was just for her.

She had always loved painting, colors smearing across her fingertips, the satisfying drag of a brush on canvas. But she never had the chance to really dive into it—too busy being polished into the perfect little lady, too busy keeping her dresses spotless and her posture straight.

But now? Now she could be messy. She could wear old jeans and get paint in her hair. She could be rachel. Rachel Elizabeth Dare. RED.

And at first, it was great. She made friends, laughed too hard, lost track of time while working on pieces she actually cared about.

But, of course, no place was safe from them.

    So. Incredibly. Infuriating.

Always had to one-up her, always had some oh-so-clever remark about her work, always there to roll their eyes or smirk like they had her all figured out. God. Fuck them.

    She loathed them. Truly. Completely.

And she definitely didn’t spend time thinking about how sharp their jawline was. Or how annoyingly nice their hands looked when they sketched. Or the way they towered over her. Or how, if they were just a little kinder, they’d probably be—

Nope. Not happening. Shutting that thought down immediately.

Tonight, after class, Rachel stayed late, focused on a new painting. Everyone else had gone home, leaving her in blissful silence, just her and her brushes. Until the door creaked open.

She tensed, her grip on her brush tightening as she turned. Just when she gets a moment for herself and— of course, it had to be them.

Sitting down like they belonged here. Causally flipping open their notebook.

    Sketching.

Rachel narrowed her eyes, scowling. Great. Just what she needed.
