All the Guild members seem to have given up on Lovecraft, who went to sleep at the bottom of the sea as soon as he was freed from the shackles of agreements with Fitzgerald. All that was known about Lovecraft was that he was incredibly strange, in many ways ridiculous and creepy. And he loved sleeping much more than staying awake.
Just because of this fact, no one bothered Lovecraft, because would it be common sense to dive into the water just to wake up something too similar and unlike a human at the same time?
Howard didn't care: since the Guild had broken up, he could sleep with a clear conscience (although what is this conscience for him?). But now, probably a month has passed, and Lovecraft got out of the water again, awake, but with the same sleepy and zombie look. His inhuman nature was pining for some reason, and his memory was throwing up fragments with John's participation. Yes, it might have been tolerable (and pleasant) for Lovecraft to see John.
If Steinbeck had asked how Lovecraft found him, the latter would have cracked his strangely long neck and replied: "I just knew where to go." It was in the style of Lovecraft. All Lovecraft knew was that John was still in Yokohama, and everything else was predictable, understandable, and unnecessary.
Lovecraft, instead of the typical greetings and smiles for most people, said to John in a slow voice:
"I slept well... It seems."
