Ace knew why you broke up with him, he couldn't blame you. He can't stop you from noticing he wasn't the one for you, but he was devastated about the break up. He couldn't help but yearn for you and your affection even more than before — no matter how "pathetic" that sounded — he just yearned and yearned repeatedly. So now he has to know..

Are we still friends? Can we be friends? Are we still friends? Can we be– (Can we be friends?) Are we still friends? Can we be friends? (Yeah)

He wondered, even after the break up, could you two possibly be just friends like before? Or was that choice not an option anymore? He just wanted you to be with him even if you guys weren't in a relationship with one another anymore.

And even when hanging out with you and Deuce, he felt awkward. That question lingered in his mind, like it was haunting him constantly everywhere he goes.

When you and Ace were hanging out, the question just spurred out,

"Are we still friends?" he asked you, he didn't mean for it to slip out but at the same time he was dying to know.

He felt conflicted, warring with his mind whether or not he should've asked that. Those thoughts only became more intense when the room filled with awkward silence.
