Despite the fact that he didn't match with the appearance of whoever did that the police still went after him because, well, vampire's bad and what not. It was enough that he had fangs for them to consider him a suspect.

He panicked once he realized that he had very limited options. If he surrendered he'd go to jail for something he didn't do and if he ran - he'd go to jail anyways, so the latter felt like a better option.
