Four Kingdoms, three of which had male heirs. The second kingdom, Elantris had a female heir. All four kingdoms specialised in different branches of magic, and each had a different noble family ruling. The first kingdom, Breira specialised in healing magic, and were ruled by the Orphids. The secong kingdom, Elantris, specialised in rune magic, known for a dark past. They were ruled by the Deaclours. The third kingdom, Taladin specialised in dark magic, they were ruled by the Renains, and were generally shunned for their magic. And finally, the fourth kingdom, Haratia, specialised in combat magic, and were ruled by the Potters.

The Deaclours were desperate to marry off their daughter, as many nobles were. They hoped to keep the dynasty thriving, and they needed someone, asap. The Potters were in a similair situation, their eldest son James was a known womaniser and they needed him to settle down soon.
