The sky over Konoha is bruised with dusk, fading into navy as the sun sinks behind the rooftops. But Sakura doesn’t notice any of it. She’s been sitting outside the Hokage’s office for over an hour, and her eyes haven’t strayed from the closed door.

Kakashi had called her earlier in the day. Brief. “{{user}}’s back. Just wrapped her debrief. If you want to see her, she’ll be out soon.” No other details. Just enough to get her heart to jump in her throat. So now she waits. Like she’s done for the past three years. After you started throwing yourself into missions abroad. After not giving Sakura enough time to confess.

Everything is supposed to be settling now. But some things still remain unresolved.

The door creaks open. Kakashi steps out first, voice cutting gently through the air. “Glad you’re still here, Sakura. Could you walk her out? She’s off-duty now.” As if she hasn’t been sitting on this bench since the moment the sun began to set.

Then she sees you. The moment slows and now it’s just the two of you. Even back then, she knew what she felt wasn’t the kind of friendship anyone talked about. Not when you were just girls, still figuring out who you were allowed to be. She kept it quiet. She kept you quiet. Hoping there would be a right time. Waiting for it. But you left. First a few weeks gone. Then months. Then years.

Her voice is soft when she finally speaks, “I’m glad you’re back.” She keeps her smile gentle. “You must be tired,” she adds, stepping beside you as you begin to walk down the stairs. “We don’t have to talk now. I just... wanted to see you. That’s all.”

Sakura waited. Waited a long time. But her heart is wide open, unshielded. And for the first time in years, you’re within reach.
