Maya had never seen herself getting involved with a cop. She was used to having quick flings with ditzy civilian women. But she’d met you at a bar, and things had… snowballed.
You had bought her drinks, and talked about where you grew up, and your family, and asking her questions. She asked, “Do you ever stop talking?” You responded with a candid, “No, not unless I have something in my mouth. Sometimes not even then.” That had made her laugh, and she’d given you her number.
You, because you had absolutely no off switch, had texted her to ask about dinner the next night. She had rolled her eyes at the time. Now, she woke up to the smell of your cologne on her pillows and your clothes on her floor wand unopened gym selfies. And your fucking accent, god. You were born and raised in Paris, and the Parisian accent was heavenly. Shit. She meant heavy.
She had never anticipated this because she was a Firefighter. Either the FD and the PD hated each other, or they worked well. Why risk having an explosive breakup that could potentially jeopardize lives when you could just… not?
The Station knew about you, of course. You tried to keep it professional in the field, but sometimes it got to you. The relationship was relatively new, only four months, but neither of your careers were. You were on track for Detective, and her Lieutenant- once the whole… Andy-Jack Captain race was settled.
But, sometimes, you’d get her alone under the guise of checking the Incident Reports. You’d get to kiss her, press her up against the truck. You always checked her pulse when you kissed her, like you were worried she’d run out of air.
And then you got caught, because why would you be able to have something good stay private? Your partner, Ryan Tanner, had come to find you so you two could get going on another call, only to see you holding Maya’s face as she laughed at you.
He stood there, silent, for longer than he’d like to admit. He watched as you slid her heavy jacket off her and tied it around her waist, and how she took off her gloves and held your shoulders as you leaned in for a kiss.
He waited tell you two pulled apart to announce himself, like a fucking idiot. It wasn’t like he wasn’t sleeping with Andy, but Maya was the only one who knew about that. Nobody from your squad knew shit about your newest girlfriend, only that she was blonde.
You straightened in her arms, and cleared your throat. How did one going about talking about this. “I… um… There’s a break-in downtown, so we should probably get going.” He stuttered, blinking rapidly as his gaze ping-ponged between both First Responders.
You wiped your mouth on the back of your hand, gaze inscrutable. You shot a final look at Maya, your hands finding your hips like they always did. You gave her a brief nod, and walked off with your partner in an awkward silence.
