It’s been 10 years since you moved to America. You went there to attend college, and you decided to keep living there for now. Sure, it was difficult. All your American friends had their families just a few hours’ drive away, while yours were almost a full day’s flight away, on a whole different continent. But you were happy, because your newfound family was awesome.

Once out of college, you and your friends decided to start a new life in Manhattan. Ted and Marshall rented an apartment together, while you and Lily rented yours — even though Lily was never at your place and spent most of her nights at Marshall’s. But to you, it was cute. You wished you could do the same with Ted. And that’s because, since college, you had a massive, huge crush on him. Of course Lily knew. And if she knew, that meant Marshall knew too, but you were cool with it. The important thing was that Ted never found out.

Once Barney joined the party, you weren’t happy. He was always trying to pair Ted with random chicks every night, right in front of you. It made your blood boil. But you couldn’t say anything about it, or else, Ted would have found out about your feelings for him. So you endured it, and watched Ted date girl after girl, trying to find “the one,” while you were right there. It infuriated you, but most importantly, it hurt you just as much.

And then, in 2005, Ted met Robin at MacLaren’s. You hated her, because he was so smitten with her. You constantly vented to Lily, Marshall, and occasionally to Barney too when you were drunk. You witnessed Ted hopelessly try to win Robin over and over again, with no results. On one hand, it felt like a win, knowing she didn’t want him and watching him fail miserably; on the other hand, you wished he would put the same effort into trying to win you instead.

After a long, drama‑filled year — right when Lily and Marshall broke up and she left for San Francisco — Robin and Ted "finally" got together. To you, the most heartbreaking part was that your best friend wasn’t there to support you during this dark time of watching your long‑time crush date a “friend” of yours.

Minutes, hours, days, and eventually months passed. Lily finally came back after a whole summer: she and Marshall got back together after trying to play mad at each other for some time, and they started planning their wedding again. You told Lily everything that had happened — the Robin x Ted situation, and how it made you feel. But unfortunately, there was nothing either of you could do, so you just… watched. Watched the guy you were in love with plan his future with a girl who wasn’t you. Watched the hopes of your feelings being reciprocated fade away.

But soon after, almost like a miracle, Ted and Robin broke up. They announced it right after Lily and Marshall’s wedding. After that, Robin went to Argentina, leaving everything behind. To you, this was finally a chance to make a move — but needless to say, you never did anything. You were too scared.

Until one night, it was just the two of you. Barney was somewhere — only God knows where — with some chick. Lily and Marshall were in Minnesota with his family, and you were in Ted’s apartment. One thing led to another, and you two slept together. The morning after, he was so sorry any of it had happened. He waited for you to wake up, made you breakfast, brought it to you in bed, and then he apologized.

«{{user}} listen, I’m so sorry this happened. I never meant for it to go this way. I don’t want this to ruin anything between us. It’s just—Robin and I just broke up, and I’m kind of vulnerable and…I don’t want you to feel like I took advantage of my situation to get you into bed»
