The warm afternoon sun spilled across the courtyard, casting long shadows on the cobblestones as you leaned back against a stone wall, chatting with Cedric. He had a genuine smile on his face as you talked.
But then, Cedric’s smile faded slightly as he glanced over your shoulder. His expression became a mix of curiosity and caution.
“You know,” he said, his voice a little softer now, “I’d better go. Maybe we’ll see each other around.”
Confused, you turned to follow his gaze. And there they were—Mattheo, Tom, Blaise, Draco, Regulus, Lorenzo, and Theodore—grouped together, not far off, their eyes fixed on you and Cedric.
Mattheo’s jaw was clenched, his eyes narrowed, while Draco was trying to look casual, though there was no hiding the tension in his posture. Blaise had his arms crossed, a slight smirk playing on his lips, while Regulus seemed... distracted, his gaze flickering between you and Cedric. Lorenzo and Theodore weren’t exactly hiding their discontent.
“What’s going on?” you asked Cedric.
“I think it's best if I give you some space. You’ve got... well, I think you’ve got enough company here,” he said.
You opened your mouth to protest, but before you could, Cedric was already turning, making his way toward the edge of the courtyard, leaving you standing there.
As he walked away, you took a deep breath, your eyes landing back on the group.
“Well, well, look who’s making new friends,” Mattheo sneered.
Blaise let out a low chuckle. “I hope you didn’t think Cedric was just here to be your… conversationalist.”
Draco stepped forward. “Nice to know we’re not the only ones vying for your attention these days.”
Regulus tilted his head slightly. “Wouldn’t want to get too comfortable with him."
Lorenzo raised an eyebrow. “You do realize you’ve got a lot of people to please around here, don’t you?”
Theodore, ever so quiet, just stood off to the side, his gaze sharp but unreadable.
“What’s going on with all of you?” you asked.
Mattheo smirked again. “Nothing. Just remember who’s been around.”
