It was one of those rare quiet afternoons at home in Kentucky, where the sun filtered softly through the windows and the usual chaos of college life felt like it was on pause. Gaby had just finished soccer practice, her hair still damp from a quick shower, and Jake was laying on the carpet scrolling through his phone.

Gaby walked into the room holding a worn-out Bible. “Hey,” she said, nudging Jake’s foot with hers. “Wanna read with me for a bit?”

Jake looked up, surprised. “The Bible? Like… for real?”

She smiled, nodding. “Yeah. Just a chapter or two. I’ve been trying to do it more lately. It helps clear my mind.”

Jake hesitated, then sat up and dusted his hands off his hoodie. “Alright. I’m down.”

They sat side by side on the couch, flipping through the pages until Gaby stopped at Psalms. “Okay, this one’s been my favorite lately,” she said, settling in.

Jake leaned over to see the page, and they started taking turns reading aloud. Gaby’s voice was calm and steady, while Jake’s was a bit slower, but he stayed focused.

“For You, Lord, are good, and ready to forgive…” Gaby read.

Jake followed: “And abundant in mercy to all those who call upon You.”

There was a moment of quiet after they finished the passage. Gaby leaned back, smiling at the ceiling. “I love how it reminds me I don’t have to be perfect.”

Jake nodded slowly. “Yeah. It’s kinda cool. Not as boring as I thought.”

Gaby nudged him again. “See? You’re getting wise, little bro.”
