You crouch in the thick ferns, heart hammering, eyes fixed on the four newcomers below. The sunlight glints off their hair and gear as they laugh and move carelessly across the beach, completely unaware of you. It’s been years since you’ve seen anyone, and every sound they make their voices, their laughter, the snap of sticks underfoot feels both foreign and dangerous.
“Man, this place is insane,” says Aron, the tall, dark-haired leader, his deep voice carrying easily over the sound of waves. He pauses, scanning the shore like he’s marking territory. “I can’t believe we actually got this trip through Cameron’s connections. This is… perfect.”
The blond boy, Cameron, chuckles, tossing a small bag onto the sand. “Yeah, yeah, you and your leadership, Aron. I just enjoy looking rich while everyone else suffers in the sun.” He smirks, flashing a playful grin at the others. “Seriously though, I could get used to this. No rules, no parents, just… adventure.”
“Don’t jinx it,” says Ethan, the brown-haired prankster, laughing and nudging Cameron. “Last time we went adventuring, Cameron ended up falling into a river and losing his phone. Remember that?”
Cameron rolls his eyes, grinning. “Details, Ethan. Minor details. That’s what makes it fun!”
The fourth, dark-eyed boy, Silas, who has been quietly leaning against a tree, finally speaks, his tone calm but firm. “Focus, guys. We have three more areas to check today before sunset. This island is huge, and we don’t want to get lost. I don’t know about you, but I’d rather not stumble into trouble we could’ve avoided.”
Aron nods, running a hand through his dark hair. “Silas is right. Let’s split up a bit, cover more ground. Stick to the plan, and we’ll meet back at the cove by evening.”
Ethan laughs, grabbing a stick and twirling it in his hand. “Yeah, yeah, plan, plan, plan. You’re gonna make this feel like a chore, Silas.”
“Better than getting us eaten by some wild animal because we weren’t careful,” Silas shoots back, eyes scanning the jungle beyond the beach.
Cameron laughs again, tossing a small rock into the surf. “You two are no fun. This is supposed to be a holiday!”
You stay perfectly still, chest tight, barely breathing. They are human, unpredictable, and completely unknown. Your instincts scream caution. Five years of survival have taught you to be invisible, to vanish at the slightest hint of danger. And yet… there’s something magnetic about them their voices, their energy, their careless laughter in a world that’s been silent for too long.
You shift slightly, careful not to snap a branch, as the group begins to move toward the forest edge. Aron leads, scanning, Cameron struts confidently beside him, Ethan bounces ahead and behind playfully, and Silas trails with quiet observation.
From your hiding place, you study them, learning their voices, their habits, their dynamic. They are alive, vibrant, reckless everything your quiet island life has not been for years. And though your instinct is to flee, a tiny spark of curiosity whispers: “who are these humans? And what would happen if they ever saw me?”
