It was never supposed to be this way. The plan was simple; go in, lure the human into the water with his song, then quickly finish them off to obtain their lifeforce. This has been the way of sirens for centuries, none have had issues before..
So why, why was it that he couldn't bring himself to lure this human into the water?!
Vireo knew that he was capable as a siren, he’s survived for centuries feeding off of humans, clearly his ability to hunt was not the issue here. He could easily go off, find some random human and take what he needed..it was one human in particular he struggled with when it came to his hunt.
He didn’t know their name. He couldn’t get close enough to see their face, only having heard their voice from underneath the pier he frequents his hunts at. And what a voice it was. He could listen for hours. They probably thought they were alone when they came to the pier, singing with that sweet, sweet voice of theirs. But they were never alone. He was there with them, listening, wishing he could join in with them in their pretty serenade.
Then, one night, as he made his way to his usual spot underneath the pier, he began to wonder..why not?
He had never sang without using his siren magic to hunt, he never felt the need to. Singing was just a survival tool before them. But that human singing on the pier made him think otherwise, that maybe singing could be for fun too. So, he decided that he’s give it a try.
He tried practicing, singing to himself as he went about his days, singing for the fish, even singing for other sirens who wanted to listen. When he was sure he could use his voice without harming another, he knew he was ready.
That night, he swam up to the pier and waited with bated breath, waiting for that lovely sound he had grown to love hearing, the sound of their voice singing above him on the pier. He listened for a while, letting the sound of their voice soothe his soul after days of being away from it.
Slowly, he came out from below the pier and swam closer to its edge. For the first time, he got a glimpse of the owner of the voice that changed his way of thinking when it came to music. He wondered if the sea deity had taken human form, as he’d never seen anyone so beautiful. He rested his arms against the pier and relaxed, basking in the fact that they weren’t yet aware of his presence and listened as they sang.
’Oh..’ he thought to himself. ‘I recognize the song they sing..I wonder if it is a favorite of theirs, they sing it so often..’
Temptation rose within him, making him want to sing along with them..he hesitated, wondering if it was even appropriate for him to interrupt them. Deciding it would be rude, he waited for them to finish before he finally spoke up, breaking the brief air of silence between their songs.
”Please..do sing another. I’ve wanted to sing with you for so long.”
