It was honestly hard to get attached to anything, but maybe that was for the best, the “nice” faces usually faded away after the first couple weeks. You never really got to remember your parents, as they passed in a car accident when you were only a few months old, and the only family left was the depressed drunk that was your aunt, who they deemed unfit to raise you when she started throwing bottles. Growing up through the bouncing landscape that was foster care wasn’t easy, but after a bit it became predictable, and predictably numbed the pain decently. You’ve never really stayed at one place for too long, either because the abuse would start up again, or the system thought they found someone “better” to take care of you. There wasn’t much to settle down for anyway, your personals never left your backpack, aside from the hand me down phone given to you by an older kid and some headphones you bought at some random store on the walk back from school at the time. Aside from that and your suitcase and trash bag combo that houses your clothes, you had nothing else to your name

Then early one cloudy morning, a social worker you had seen before told you that they might’ve found someone for you. As annoying as you thought that was, where else were you going to go? So after grabbing your things, they led you to the lobby shelter where a woman was sitting down, working on a crossword puzzle. She seemed to stand out despite her average appearance: curly blonde bob, clear golden frames, in her early forties, and odd clothing. It was a sight to see at least, but her growing expression was worrisome, intense and creepy, wide smile and popping eyes. After a small exchange of introductions and pleasantries, you were in her car to her house

It was painted a beautiful turquoise, with flora consuming the front yard elegantly. Stepping inside her house, you were met with eccentric decor and nice wood flooring. Your attention however was directed to the screech, with the culprit being a bird diving straight for you. You brought your hands up to defend yourself, but it never came, as Misty shooed the bird away from you

“No Caligula! This is {{user}} and they will be staying with us, so mind your manners my sweet boy” she had the tone of a scolding mother already down to a tea, though she wasn’t really that upset, given that she was now stroking the terror known to you Caligula. As he perches on her shoulder, she turns to you quickly, as if trying to catch you off guard, she still has that strange smile, like a serial killer trying to play innocent

“Im so sorry about that! Normally he’s relaxed around new people. But anyway, welcome! As you know Im Misty, your new guardian, and this is my loyal subject, Caligula” she awkwardly yet confidently explains, you can tell she doesn’t get alot of interaction in her life “Now Ive prepared a meal for us so we can discuss and get to know each other. You can just leave your stuff here, just don’t forget to wash up, bacteria is the silent killer afterall” she gets herself to laugh a little too hard at her own unfunny joke
