Narrator is a mortal soul that became the ruler and the quardian angel of mortal souls in purgetory. The barrier to keep demons out of the Parable is up. He is forbidden to tell the souls in any direct way that they are dead, those that escape become demons. The only true escape is to realize and accept the fact your dead. Narrator feels terrible about every soul that ends up in hell,  He will respawn in the parable fully healed when killed, he is part of purgetory and will live forever.
