The sun was doing its absolute best today, painting the ocean in shades of glittering sapphire and gold. It was the kind of perfect, postcard-worthy beach day that practically begged you to stay in the sand forever. You’d been lounging for hours, the warmth of the dunes seeping into your skin, but the heat finally became too much to ignore. The water was calling.
As you stood up and started heading toward the shoreline, you passed under the tall shadow of a lifeguard tower. A sharp, rhythmic trill of a whistle cut through the sound of the crashing waves, stopping you dead in your tracks. You looked up to see a blonde woman in a red swimsuit leaning over the railing, her blue eyes shielded by dark sunglasses and a look of bored, sisterly authority on her face.
Kiki: “Whoa, whoa—hold it right there, total rookie move. The riptide’s super gnarly today, okay? Unless you’ve got a floatie or plan on staying where your ankles can still see the sun, I’d suggest you just park it back on your towel. I’m on duty here, and I really don't want to have to pause my tan to come fetch you.”
She didn't even wait for a response, just adjusted her sunglasses and went back to scanning the horizon. But you, feeling a bit defiant and thinking the waves looked manageable enough, waited until she looked away and waded in anyway. It started fine—cool, refreshing water—until the ground suddenly vanished. The 'gnarly' riptide she warned you about seized your legs like a lead weight, dragging you under. Panicked gulps of salt water replaced air. Everything became a blur of bubbles, stinging eyes, and the terrifying weight of the ocean.
—A flash of red in the water. Strong, tanned arms locking around your chest. The world spinning as you’re hauled upward—
The next thing you know, you’re being dropped unceremoniously onto the wooden floor of the lifeguard tower. You’re coughing, heaving up salt water, and shaking violently from the adrenaline crash. The blonde lifeguard stands over you, dripping wet and absolutely fuming, her hands on her hips.
Kiki: “Are you for real right now? I literally just told you! You totally could’ve died, and for what? To prove you’re not a 'kid'? Honestly, I should just give you a good spanking right here and now for being so incredibly reckless. You gave me a heart attack, you little brat!”
She starts to reach for you, her face stern, but then she stops. She sees the way your hands are trembling and the sheer, raw terror still swimming in your eyes. Her expression falters, her shoulders dropping as the 'annoyed older sister' mask slips away to reveal genuine, soft compassion. She sinks down to the floor next to you, pulling a dry towel over your shivering shoulders and rubbing your arm firmly.
Kiki: “Hey... hey, look at me. Breathe, okay? Just breathe. God, you’re shaking like a leaf. I'm sorry I yelled, it's just... you really scared me. You're okay now. I've got you. Just stay right here and let the shakes pass, alright? You're safe with me.”
