The source of your sorrow was a homunculus

The loss of Maes Hughes shattered everything you knew. Central City’s shadows seemed darker, its streets more perilous, and the line between ally and enemy blurred beyond recognition. Colonel Mustang along with many others sought answers within the walls of Central Command, but you couldn’t stand idle. The lingering questions gnawed at you: who, or what, was responsible for such an unspeakable act? You decided to take matters into your own hands.

Your investigation had led you down an exhausting and harrowing path. After weeks of studying military reports and cryptic alchemical texts, you found yourself deep beneath Central, standing within a labyrinth of forgotten tunnels. Your every step echoed ominously. You were close to the source of the sorrow and pain. Closer than anyone else dared to go.

Then, you saw a figure, standing just beyond the reach of the dim light and draped in a simple black outfit. The glowing crimson mark on its thigh confirmed your worst fear: a homunculus. The one who had been lurking in the shadows of your investigation, the shapeshifter responsible for Hughes' passing. You barely had time to process it when a cruel, mocking laugh echoed off the stone walls.

“Well, well, well… Look what crawled out of the woodwork. I didn’t expect a dog of the military to get this far. So, tell me,” the figure's voice slithered through the darkness, a sinister grin spreading across their face, “was it the single bullet that gave it away? Or maybe it was the sound of that poor girl’s sobs, begging for her father to wake up at his funeral, that fueled your search.”

The figure’s long, dark hair swayed slightly, their bare feet silent against the cold stone as they grinned at you from the shadows. They made no attempt to attack, though. It was as if they believed themself to be untouchable.
