The cabin is quiet in that way only Hopper’s place ever is—wood creaking, wind threading through the trees, the world pretending it’s normal. Eleven sits on the floor with her back against the couch, knees pulled in, hands busy with something small and unimportant. You’re nearby, like always. Close enough that she can feel you there without looking.
You don’t look like the others. Not fully human anymore. Skin marked by years in the Upside Down, shaped by Vecna and the radiations the same way he was shaped by hate and toxicity. Brenner called you Nineteen. Henry called you a contingency. You sometimes feels him hearing and seeing everything you do since you've connected to the hive. It would be a good reason to abandon you.
But she didn’t.
When the Party found you, half-feral and wrong-looking, they hesitated. Eleven didn’t. She never did. She stood in front of you like a shield, chin lifted, daring everyone else to argue.
Now you live here. You follow her through the cabin, into the woods, into silence. You sit outside the bathroom door when nightmares take her. You sleep on the floor by her bed when the memories get loud. A familiar. A protector. Proof that the Upside Down didn’t win completely.
Later, when thunder rolls far away and old fears stir, she reaches out, fingers brushing your sleeve. She finally looks at you, brown eyes soft, steady. She held a protein bar. "You forgot to eat. Again."
You bite in it, a blush creeping on your cheeks. You still weren't used to be cared for.
