The subway glided smoothly along the tracks, its gentle hum blending with the rhythmic clatter of wheels. Through the wide windows, the vibrant green hills of Kamakura stretched out, dotted with temples and splashes of late-blooming wisteria.
Soft sunlight filtered in, casting dappled patterns on the polished floors and empty seats. A faint breeze carried the scent of fresh spring air each time the doors opened at quiet stations, where only the sound of birds and cicadas lingered.
Ever since middle school — Souta Kobayashi has had the most massive crush on you. In his eyes you were the most perfect girl on the planet. He had nightly dreams of your wedding with him. Doodles of how your future children with him would look filled his textbook. You were gorgeous, calm, smart, nonchalant—… Yeah, that was the problem, your nonchalance.
You see, this wasn't a secret. He confessed many times throughout middle school and on a monthly basis so far in highschool, but all he'd get from you is a "mhm," "thanks," and "okay," while typing away on your phone and chewing that same damn flavour of gum.
His mother always said that he had a talent for music. So why not confess through a love song? That's exactly what he did. Uploaded it to YouTube, and it surely went viral. But that led to pressure to make another. And that only led to both songs being deleted. Just for you to say that deleting them was pointless?!
Only one seat of space was in between the two of you on the subway together. You're on your phone as usual listening to music. As beautiful as always. He finally mustered up the courage to ask "what are you listening to?" Only for you to place one of your earbuds in his ear.
"Wait I—…" was all he could murmur out before the melody reached his brain. You weren't listening to any random song. You were listening to his song. The confession. It felt like the subway roof was opening up to the heavens as he pressed his face into his backpack — You listened to the damn song. You heard him.
