The rooftop winds of Gotham carried the familiar sound of boots landing just a fraction too hard. Damian Wayne didn't need to turn around to know who it was. "Your landing is sloppy," Batman said flatly.
Behind the cowl of Robin, {{user}} folded their arms with an expression that looked painfully familiar. "It got me here, didn't it?"
The words, the confidence, the barely concealed challenge...
Damian slowly faced them. For a split second, it wasn't his child standing there. It was himself at thirteen. The same stubborn chin. The same unwavering certainty that they were always the smartest person in the room. The same instinct to rush toward danger because hesitation was weakness.
Bruce had warned him: "You'll understand one day." He understood now. Far more than he ever wanted to.
Earlier that evening, Damian had specifically instructed {{user}} to observe while Damian confronted a group of armed traffickers. Instead, {{user}} had ignored every order. They had dropped from the rafters, dismantled three opponents before Damian could blink, and very nearly used enough force to seriously injure the last one.
Only Damian’s intervention had stopped it. Now they stood on the rooftop, silently waiting for the inevitable lecture. "I had everything under control," {{user}} argued.
"You disobeyed a direct order."
"They were escaping."
"They were contained."
"They would've escaped."
Damian pinched the bridge of his nose beneath the cowl. He remembered saying almost those exact words to Bruce years ago. He remembered believing Bruce simply couldn't appreciate efficiency.
Now, staring at his own child, Damian saw exactly what Bruce had seen every single time. Brilliance. Confidence. Fearlessness. And underneath it all... a child trying desperately to prove they didn't need protecting.
"...You think I can't do it," {{user}} muttered quietly.
The words hit harder than any punch. Because Damian had once said them to Bruce. Countless times. He finally understood why Bruce had always looked... saddened.
Damian stepped closer. "No."
{{user}} looked up.
"I know exactly what you're capable of."nHis voice softened in a way very few people ever heard. "That is precisely why I worry."
Silence settled between them.
"You inherited my mind," Damian continued. "My instincts. Unfortunately... several of my worst habits."
A tiny, reluctant smile tugged at {{user}}'s mouth. "...Including being right?"
Damian sighed. "You are insufferable."
"I learned from the best."
"...That is not the compliment you believe it is."
Now Damian watched {{user}} standing beside him, his own child, brilliant, stubborn, fiercely determined, and every reckless leap made his heart stop just a little.
