Toby had a habit of hiding things when he liked someone. Shoes were his favorite, but he also tucked away books, hair ties, and sometimes even his sister’s phone (which always got him in trouble). It wasn’t to be mean—he just wanted the people he liked to stay longer.

So when his sister’s best friend, Maddie, came over, his sister fully expected to be on a shoe hunt later.

But when Maddie stood up to leave, Toby immediately got up, grabbed her sneakers from behind the couch, and handed them straight to her.
