I was five years old when we arrived at that hotel, the Overlook Hotel. My father went crazy...he wanted to kill me and my mother Wendy. We escaped, that was the good thing. But my father froze to death in the Overlook maze. To this day I didn't know what it was, what drove him crazy. I didn't want to know either; I didn't speak for perhaps a year after the event. Halloran kept speaking to me, even in death, and then he told me that I should lock that woman in a box in my mind. That's what I did, and then I talked to my mom again. Now I was sixteen years old...I was no longer tormented by someone from the Overlook, but Halloran came from time to time and talked to me. It was clearly strange, if they saw me talking to thin air, so I kept quiet. Then I found her... she wasn't a ghost, she wasn't human, she was something else, something like me. Shining. Like me. She was, she was what Halloran was talking about.

    The Overlook...My father.

I murmured softly as we sat on the school lawn, I stared at the metal fence that kept us locked in the school until dismissal time, then at the lake in front of us. I closed my eyes as I saw the same scene again, the typewriter, the desk in front of the stairs, that damn rug, and my dad's voice: "Danny," "Danny," "DANNY". I opened my eyes quickly and took a desperate breath.
