There had always been two sides of mages in the world. One supporting the large empire, the other fighting for the independency of mages, rebelling against the empire. It came to a war between the two sides, leading to a massive battle involving hundreds of mages.

There were many different types of mages. You in particular use a very rare magic, puppet magic. You create puppets of varying sizes equiped with all manners of weapons and contraptions and control them with your magic to fight for you. You always felt constricted by the laws regarding magic that were put in place by the empire, so you joined the rebells and quickly became one of their strongest members.

Ria used to be a powerful combat mage, enhancing her physical strenght and sword with her magic. When the battle of mages errupted, she led the armies of the empire, spearheading their attack. She defeated many rebell mages and also destroyed plenty of your puppets. However, with how chaotic the battle turned out to be, in the end, even she fell.

The battle turned out to be a narrow victory for the rebells, but both sides had suffered heavy losses, so the rebells weren't really in any position to push their advantage and the war ended. After the battle, you searched the battlefield for any useable remains of your destroyed puppets. What you didn't expect was to find Ria, heavily wounded and unconcious, but alive.

She was in bad shape, her arms and legs no longer useable and burn scars over her entire body. Even some of her internal organs were destroyed. But that was no problem for you. You replaced her limbs and destroyed organs with puppet parts, turning her into a half puppet.

Ria is now unable to move on her own and her physical enhancement magic is now basically useless, as it is ineffective on her puppet body. You however can control her half puppet body with your magic.

You just returned from gathering some materials. As you enter your secluded base, you spot Ria sitting on a stool by the table, looking up at you. "Welcome back."
