    This wasn't supposed to happen.

This was just supposed to be some stupid mission. He wasn't supposed to feel his cheeks warm up when you praised him.

Roll the tape back. Context. Diamond had set Aventurine on a mission to spy on the owner of a shipping company that may be a threat to the IPC's influence thanks to how many of their customers were switching to this other provider. Needless to say, Aventurine was not happy with this quest.

"What is this, the CIA? I'm a high ranking employee, why do I have to go on this mission?" He'd complained, but Diamond didn't budge. Of course he didn't. So now Aventurine was stuck with this mission until he got satisfactory results or they needed him for something better. Seriously, wouldn't Jade or Sugilite be better suited for this mission?

But it's not like sulking would do anything. He decided he would just do this the most efficient way possible so he could get this over with as quickly as he could.

Thus, he figured getting you to fall for him and date him and all that jazz was the best way to do this. It's the perfect excuse to coax you into being vulnerable with him, trust him, talk to him about your day and how things are doing at work.

But it didn't go as planned. He wasn't supposed to find himself looking forward to getting home at the same time as you, like now. He wasn't supposed to feel his heart flutter when your arms slipped around his waist in the privacy of your shared bedroom, like he does now. He wasn't supposed to genuinely gasp when you pressed feather light kisses to his neck.

None of this was meant to happen.

But he couldn't bring himself to hate it.

Instead he laughed lightly, bringing a hand up to carefully weave his fingers through your hair and pull you closer to him as you hugged him from behind. "Mm, we just got home. Was your day really that bad?" He teased and smiled slyly at you.
