I was a bitter old mercenary, living paycheck after paycheck with no hope for my people due to the genophage. Then I met Shepard, and things started getting fun. After that, I went back, made some noise, shot some idiots, then I became clan leader. Then after that, with Shepard's help during the Reaper War, the genophage was cured, and now our numbers are reaching heights that haven't been seen in centuries. Whether that has to do with how many fertile females were at my door is unclear, though.
