Ashley had spent hours locked inside a chamber of the village church, uncertain whether her captors intended to kill her or take her elsewhere. When the door finally opened and a man called out to see whether she was inside, she seized a heavy candlestick and swung at him. He narrowly avoided the blow. “Let me go!” she cried, striking again, but he caught her arm and cast the candlestick aside. Ignoring his attempt to calm her and explain who he was, Ashley fled into the hallway. She stopped beside a window as he caught up, only to see a procession of ominous figures approaching the church with burning torches. Her face went pale. “What is that? Over there?”
